What to buy first, if you only buy one

If you want a GPS watch you will still be wearing in ten years, start with the rugged GPS watch rankings. The short version: a solar Garmin Instinct 3 in the 50 mm case is the watch that can stop meeting a charger, and a fenix 8 Solar is the same idea with maps, sapphire and titanium for people who navigate on the wrist. Everything else on this page is a variation on those two answers, argued with the maker's own numbers.

We rank on the battery table the maker publishes, mode by mode, then on the glass, the case and the water rating, because those are the things that decide whether a watch is still on your wrist in 2036. Step counts, sleep scores and training-load metrics do not move a score here. If that is what you are shopping for, a running site will serve you better.

How the category divides

Rugged GPS watches split four ways, and the split matters more than the brand:

• Solar GPS watches (Garmin Instinct 3 Solar, fenix 8 Solar, Enduro 3, Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar). A solar lens tops up a rechargeable cell. Garmin rates the Instinct 3 Solar as unlimited in smartwatch mode under its 50,000-lux assumption; that assumption is three hours a day of real sun, not a sleeve.
• Rechargeable GPS watches without solar (COROS VERTIX 2S, Suunto Vertical 2, Amazfit T-Rex 3, the AMOLED Garmins). Days to weeks per charge. The COROS VERTIX 2S posts 118 standard-GPS hours and 36 days of daily use without any solar help, which embarrasses several solar watches.
• Nightly-charge smartwatches (Apple Watch Ultra 3). Superb materials, a 40 m dive rating and a MIL-STD-810H test list, and 42 hours of battery. We include it so the comparison is honest, not as a pick.

What decides the price

Four things, in order: maps, sapphire, titanium and a dive rating. A Garmin Instinct 3 Solar has none of them and costs roughly half of a fenix 8 Solar, which has all four. Solar itself is cheap; Garmin charges a modest premium for the solar lens over the AMOLED Instinct. AMOLED screens cost more than memory-in-pixel screens and then cost you again every week in charging. The mistake buyers make

Paying for an AMOLED and then complaining about the battery. Garmin's own table for the Instinct 3 AMOLED 50 mm says 24 days in gesture mode and 9 days with the display always on; the solar model in the same case is rated unlimited. Suunto dropped solar from the Vertical 2 and its daily-use figure fell from 60 days (with solar, on the first Vertical) to 20. The screen you can read at night is the screen you charge. If you want the decade watch, buy the dimmer display and stop thinking about it.

Garmin dominates the category, so the questions people actually type are comparisons: Suunto vs Garmin, Instinct 3 vs Suunto Vertical 2 and Apple Watch Ultra vs fenix 8. Why battery is the durability spec

A watch that needs a cable every four days gets left on the charger, and a watch on the charger is not on your wrist when you need it. More to the point, a lithium cell ages with every cycle; a watch cycled every four days goes through nine times as many cycles as one cycled every five weeks.
