What to buy first

For a deployment, the Garmin Instinct 3 Solar Tactical Edition: stealth mode, a kill switch, night-vision mode, jumpmaster, a green flashlight, 10 ATM, a MIL-STD 810 claim, and Garmin's unlimited-with-solar battery rating. For basic training, a cheap G-Shock you will not cry over. For a duty watch that is not a smartwatch, a Rangeman, a Luminox or a Marathon. How tactical watches divide

• Tactical GPS smartwatches: Garmin tactix 8, Instinct 3 Tactical, Instinct 2X Solar Tactical. The tactical part is software: stealth mode disables wireless and stops recording location, NVG mode dims the display for night-vision goggles, the kill switch wipes user memory, jumpmaster handles HAHO/HALO/static jumps, and the flashlight has a green option. The base watch is an Instinct or a fenix.
• ABC digitals: G-Shock Rangeman and Mudman, Suunto Core Alpha. No radio to go silent, a red or plain backlight, and a battery measured in months or years. The Core Alpha's backlight is built for NVG use; its 30 m water rating is the trade.
• Analog quartz: Luminox Navy SEAL 3001 (tritium tubes, 200 m, 50 g, five-year battery) and the Marathon TSAR (sapphire, 30 ATM, issued to Canadian and U.S. forces per Marathon). Nothing to charge, nothing to update, nothing to hack.
• Cheap and disposable: G-Shock DW-5600E and GA-100. The right answer whenever the watch might be confiscated, lost or crushed, which describes most of training.

What decides the price

The tactical software costs almost nothing to make and a lot to buy: the same Instinct 3 Solar hardware carries a premium as the Tactical Edition, and the tactix 8 is a fenix 8 with the software and a green LED. The mistake buyers make

Buying the smartwatch before checking whether they can wear it. Units and facilities vary on wireless devices, cameras and anything that logs location; stealth mode exists precisely because a standard smartwatch does all three. Ask before you buy, and if the answer is no, the ABC digital and analog picks in best military watches are not a consolation prize. They are the watches with the longer service record.

The second mistake is treating a MIL-STD-810 line as a certification. It is a set of test methods a maker can run itself and self-declare; Apple lists the subsections it tested, Garmin says "built to" or "tested to" without listing them, and Casio does not claim it at all on watches that have survived more deployments than any of them.
