Verdict and score
What it is built for
Garmin's release calls it a rugged smartwatch with a solar-powered display, a metal-reinforced bezel, a fiber-reinforced polymer case, a built-in flashlight on every model, water-rated to 100 meters and built to MIL-STD 810 for thermal and shock resistance. Read that list from the perspective of a buyer who hates rebuying: a case that shrugs off knocks, a battery that does not need a cable, a light for the tent, and a price that does not hurt if the lens scratches. The maps and speaker of a fenix are absent by design; this is the instrument, not the tool.

"With solar" assumes all-day wear with three hours a day at 50,000 lux for the watch modes, and 50,000-lux conditions during the activity for the GPS modes. That is midday sun on an exposed wrist; a jacket cuff in an office gets you the left-hand column, which is still forty days. The 50mm doubles the 45mm on solar GPS hours because the lens is bigger. Durability and what fails first
Ten ATM, which is swimming and snorkeling, not diving. A MIL-STD 810 claim for thermal and shock, stated by Garmin without the subsections. A metal-reinforced bezel that takes the hits a polymer one used to. An operating range of -20°C to 60°C. And a lens Garmin describes only as "scratch-resistant." Navigation without maps
Breadcrumb trail, waypoints, TracBack, a compass, an altimeter and a barometer, plus a sunrise/sunset glance with civil twilight and a moon-phase glance from GPS position. Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ, which switches between modes automatically. Daily wear
Five buttons and no touchscreen, so nothing to lock in gloves or rain. A monochrome memory-in-pixel screen that is readable in any daylight and dark until you tap the light. A flashlight with variable intensity, a red mode and a strobe. Notifications and Garmin's health metrics for people who want them; none of that moves our score. The 50mm is a big watch; the 45mm is the same watch for a wrist that would rather not carry it.
Who should skip it
Anyone who needs maps on the wrist: fenix 8 Solar or Enduro 3. Anyone who wants sapphire: the fenix sapphire editions, the Suunto Vertical or the COROS VERTIX 2S, all in the rugged GPS rankings. Anyone who wants a bright color screen: not this line, and not for the reason you think, per Solar vs AMOLED. Anyone who wants a watch that never sees a cable at all: a G-Shock Rangeman.

Does the Garmin Instinct 3 Solar have a sapphire lens?
No. Garmin describes a scratch-resistant display and names no lens material. Sapphire is on the fenix 8 sapphire editions, Enduro 3 and tactix 8.
Is the Instinct 3 Solar waterproof?
Garmin rates it 10 ATM, which covers swimming and snorkeling. It is not dive-rated; the fenix 8 is.
Instinct 3 Solar 45mm or 50mm?
The 50mm if it fits your wrist: Garmin's table gives it 260 solar GPS hours against the 45mm's 130, because the lens is larger.
