Which watch has the most accurate GPS? Multi-band explained, and what it costs you in battery

The short answer, expanded

Makers do not publish accuracy in meters, and independent numbers vary by terrain, so we will not pretend to a ranking we cannot source. What every maker does publish is which satellite systems and frequencies the watch uses, and what each mode costs in hours. That is enough to make the decision, because the accuracy difference between watches with the same mode is smaller than the difference between modes on the same watch.

The three modes

• GPS-only. One constellation, one frequency. Garmin's Instinct 3 Solar 50 mm: 60 hours, 260 with solar. Fine on open trail and roads.
• All systems. GPS plus GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS as the watch supports them. More satellites in view means a better fix under partial sky. Instinct 3 Solar 50 mm: 40 hours, 80 with solar.
• All systems plus multi-band. Two frequencies (L1 and L5) from each satellite, which lets the chip reject signals bouncing off cliffs and buildings. Instinct 3 Solar 50 mm: 34 hours, 60 with solar, with Garmin's SatIQ toggling it automatically. This is the mode that fixes the wobbly track in a slot canyon.

What accuracy costs in battery

The pattern holds across makers: multi-band costs roughly 40 to 65 percent of standard-mode hours. On the COROS VERTIX 2S it is the difference between five days of tracking and less than two. That is why the default should be the cheaper mode, and multi-band a setting you reach for.

Where multi-band matters

Slot canyons, steep valleys, dense conifer cover, downtown streets, and any cliff face where signals bounce. Open ridgelines, desert, lakes and roads do not need it. Hunters in timber will see the difference on the walk out; hikers on a marked trail will see it only in their post-trip track. The GPS hunting watch rankings treat multi-band as a real feature for that reason; the hiking rankings do not weight it much.

Settings that matter more than the chip

• Recording rate. Once a second for a clean track; smart or reduced recording for a long day. Suunto lists Best/Good/OK/Low; COROS and Garmin have equivalents.
• A clear first fix. Start the activity with sky in view and wait for the lock before walking under trees.

• Wrist side and sleeve. A watch under a heavy cuff or on the inside of the wrist sees less sky. Physical, unglamorous, and the most common cause of a bad track.
