Four rows, four winners
Makers publish battery by mode, and the mode that matters depends on the buyer. A hunter tracking a morning sit reads the GPS row; a person who wants to forget the charger reads the smartwatch row; a thru-hiker reads the expedition or max-battery row. We rank across all four, from each maker's manual or spec page, and then pick an overall winner on the rubric, which weights the smartwatch row because it decides how often the cell cycles.

Solar vs a bigger cell
The COROS VERTIX 2S is the honest surprise: 118 standard-GPS hours with no solar lens at all beats the fenix 8 Solar 51mm's 95 without sun and comes close to its 149 with. COROS did it with a bigger cell behind a low-draw MIP screen, and the trade is that there is no unlimited row: when the cell runs down, only a cable refills it. The solar Garmins and the Suunto have smaller non-solar figures and an escape hatch the COROS does not. Which is better depends on whether you are outside; the argument is on best solar GPS watches.
Why this is a durability page
The mistake buyers make
Comparing a headline figure from one maker against a different row from another. Garmin's 653 hours is a low-rate max-battery mode; COROS's 118 is standard full GPS; Suunto's 500 is a power-saving mode. Read the same row across makers, which is what the table above does, and check the multi-band row before assuming any of these figures survives turning accuracy up; see GPS accuracy explained.

- Physical buttons, a monochrome display readable in full sun, and a flashlight with a red mode.
- 10 ATM rating and a MIL-STD 810 claim on a watch that costs less than half a fenix.
Where it falls short
- No maps: it navigates breadcrumb trails and waypoints, not topo maps.
- The solar figures assume three hours a day at 50,000 lux, which is midday sun, not a sleeve.
- Garmin does not name the lens material; treat it as strengthened glass, not sapphire.

Plenty of sites say they took every watch up a mountain. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the maker's own battery table mode by mode, check what the lens and case are actually made of, note the water rating and whether a MIL-STD-810 claim exists, ask how long the maker keeps updating the line, and score every pick on a public rubric weighted for a decade of ownership. Every figure links to where it came from.
