The specs that differ
Battery and power
Garmin's table for the Instinct 3 Solar 50 mm: 40 days in smartwatch mode and unlimited with solar (all-day wear, three hours a day at 50,000 lux); 60 GPS hours, 260 with solar; 150 hours in max-battery GPS, unlimited with solar. Suunto's table for the Vertical 2: 20 days in daily use, 40 in standby; 65 hours of multi-band GPS (60 always-on), 75 single-band, up to 250 in power-saving modes. The Suunto is a good rechargeable watch. The Instinct is in a different category, and the reason is the solar lens Suunto removed for this generation; the first-gen Vertical Titanium Solar still has it and is the Suunto to cross-shop if battery matters (see Suunto vs Garmin).
Durability
The Vertical 2 has the better materials: sapphire crystal and a titanium bezel on a glass-fiber polyamide case. Garmin calls the Instinct 3's display "scratch-resistant" and names no sapphire, on a fiber-reinforced polymer case with a metal-reinforced bezel. The Instinct has the better ratings: 10 ATM and a stated MIL-STD 810 build for thermal and shock, against 100 m and no military-standard line on Suunto's page. Both have physical buttons and a flashlight. The Suunto is 87 g; Garmin does not publish the Instinct 3's weight in the documents we cite.
Navigation and maps
The Vertical 2 shows offline maps on a 466 × 466 AMOLED; the Instinct shows a breadcrumb trail and waypoints on a monochrome screen. If you route-find off trail, that is the whole decision. If you follow marked trails and want to know the way back to the truck, the Instinct's TracBack does the safety job and the map is a phone job.
Price per decade
Our value metric is the launch price against the service-life class the other metrics imply, not a number we invent. The Instinct sits in the lower price tier with the lowest charge-cycle count on the site; the Vertical 2 sits in the middle tier with a three-week cycle. Over ten years that is the difference between a cell that has done perhaps 100 cycles and one that has done 170. Both are within a lithium cell's life, but only one leaves margin.
Who should buy neither
Someone who wants maps AND solar: that is the fenix 8 Solar or the Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar. Someone who wants the Suunto's materials at the Instinct's cycle count: the COROS VERTIX 2S, with 36 days and sapphire, in the rugged GPS rankings.

Where it falls short
- No maps: it navigates breadcrumb trails and waypoints, not topo maps.
