A solar GPS watch (Garmin Instinct 3 Solar, fenix 8 Solar) has a solar layer in the lens that tops up a sealed lithium cell driving a GPS chip and a screen; you still charge it by cable, just less often. A Tough Solar G-Shock has a panel under the dial charging a small rechargeable cell that runs a low-draw module, and there is no charger at all. Both are "solar"; only one never meets a cable. Casio rates its Tough Solar models at about 6 to 10 months from a full charge in the dark, with the usage assumptions listed in each manual (about 8 months on the Rangeman GW-9400, 10 on the GW-M5610U). Garmin rates the Instinct 3 Solar at 40 days and the fenix 8 Solar 51mm at 30 days in smartwatch mode without solar. Every figure on the site is the maker's, cited on the product card.

Under Garmin's stated condition: all-day wear with three hours a day outdoors at 50,000 lux, in smartwatch mode. Indoors, the same watch is rated 40 days. Garmin describes a "rechargeable, built-in lithium-ion battery" and does not describe user replacement. A solar lens slows the cell's aging by cutting charge cycles; it does not make the cell serviceable. Casio's Tough Solar cell, by contrast, is a service-center replacement described in the manual. For a watch kept a decade in sand and rock, yes: sapphire is the only lens that stays clear through years of grit. Strengthened glass (Gorilla Glass, Garmin's Power Glass) survives a sharp strike better and scratches sooner; mineral scratches slowly and costs little to replace. See sapphire vs Gorilla Glass.

Garmin's Instinct 3 release says "scratch-resistant display" and does not name sapphire; it names sapphire on the fenix 8, tactix 8 and Enduro 3. We flag a watch as sapphire only when the maker names it, so the Instinct is not flagged.

That the maker says it designed or tested the watch against some methods from a U.S. military environmental test standard. The maker picks the methods; there is no certifying body. A listed set of tests (Apple) says more than "built to" (Garmin Instinct), which says more than "military-grade" (Amazfit). Casio does not use the line at all. See MIL-STD-810 explained.

10 ATM and 100 m are the same claim, and 200 m is Casio's standard for G-Shock; both describe static pressure resistance, not a diving depth. Garmin's fenix 8 and tactix 8 carry a separate "dive rated to 40 m" line with leakproof buttons, and Apple cites EN13319 for the Ultra 3. Citizen's Promaster is an ISO-rated 200 m diver. The Mudmaster GWG-2000 and Rangeman beat the Garmins on mud seals and field record; the fenix 8 and tactix 8 beat the Rangeman on the lens (sapphire) and carry a dive rating and a MIL-STD line. All are built to be hit. Ranked on toughest watches.

A watch with an altimeter, barometer and compass and no GPS. The altimeter and barometer are one pressure sensor read two ways. Because there is no satellite receiver to feed, an ABC watch runs on solar or a coin cell for months to years. It cannot show a map or record a track. See ABC watch explained.

Only if you want the watch itself to walk you back. A hunter who carries a handheld or a phone app wants sensors, sunrise and sunset times and a battery that never dies (Rangeman, Pro Trek); one who hunts new country wants track-back (Instinct 3 Solar). Rules for wireless devices vary by unit, facility and command, and we never state one as universal. If you do not know the rule, a watch with no radio is the safe choice: a solar or coin-cell Casio, a Luminox or a Marathon. See best watch for basic training.

On materials, yes: Grade 5 titanium, sapphire, a 40 m dive rating and a published MIL-STD 810H test list. Apple rates its battery at 42 hours, so the cell cycles roughly daily, which is why it ranks last on this site for a decade of use. Compared on Apple Watch Ultra vs fenix 8.

By our rubric, the G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400: a serviceable solar cell, no firmware, 200 m, and a module Casio has sold for over a decade. If it must have GPS, the Instinct 3 Solar; if it must have sapphire and maps, the fenix 8 Solar. The argument is on buy-it-for-life watches.
