Which Garmin, in one paragraph

Buy the Instinct 3 Solar (50 mm) if you want a decade of GPS without a charger and can live without maps. Buy the fenix 8 Solar if you need maps on the wrist, want sapphire and titanium, and can accept charging every few weeks. Buy the Enduro 3 if you want maps and the longest GPS figure Garmin publishes (320 hours with solar). Buy the tactix 8 only if stealth mode, night-vision mode and a ballistics solver are on your job description. Everything else in the Garmin catalog is a running watch wearing outdoor clothes.

The four lines, and what separates them

• Instinct: fiber-reinforced polymer case, metal-reinforced bezel, 10 ATM, MIL-STD 810 claim, monochrome display, no maps. The 45 mm and 50 mm solar models are the value of the line; the AMOLED model is the same case with a finite battery. The Instinct E is the entry model with no solar and no flashlight.
• fenix: sapphire lens and titanium bezel on the sapphire editions, leakproof metal buttons, a 40 m dive rating, preloaded topo maps, a speaker and mic. The fenix 8 comes in AMOLED (43/47/51 mm) and Solar (47/51 mm). Garmin announced the fenix 9 and 9 Pro on August 25, 2026, with a titanium case and solar on select Pro models; the fenix 8 remains on sale and is the better-documented buy for now.
• Enduro: a 51 mm fenix chassis stripped for battery, with a nylon strap, 63 g, sapphire and titanium, and Garmin's largest GPS-with-solar figure.
• tactix: a fenix 8 with the tactical feature set (stealth mode, kill switch, NVG mode, jumpmaster, Applied Ballistics) and a green flashlight. The Instinct 3 Tactical Edition brings most of that software to the Instinct case for far less; it lives in the Tactical hub.

What decides the price

Maps, sapphire, titanium and the dive rating, in that order, then screen type. Solar adds a small premium within a line and pays for itself in the battery table. Read the battery table, not the headline

Garmin publishes a full table for every model in the owner's manual: smartwatch mode, GPS-only, all satellite systems, multi-band, max-battery GPS and expedition mode, each with and without solar. The headline number on the product page is almost always the best case. That is midday sun, not an office window.

The mistake buyers make

Choosing the AMOLED because the screen looked better in the store. Garmin's own numbers for the fenix 8 47 mm put the AMOLED at 16 days in gesture mode and the Solar at 28 days with sun; the 51 mm gap is 29 days versus 48.
