The specs that differ
Battery and power
Garmin's Instinct 3 Solar 50mm table: 40 days smartwatch (unlimited with solar), 60 GPS hours (260 with solar), 150 max-battery GPS hours (unlimited with solar), 60 days expedition (unlimited with solar). Garmin's fenix 8 Solar 47mm table: 21 days smartwatch (28 with solar), 67 GPS hours (92 with solar), 132 max-battery hours (283 with solar), 34 days expedition (58 with solar). The fenix has the bigger cell and wins without sun; the Instinct has the lower draw and wins with it. For a buyer whose watch lives outdoors, the Instinct is the watch that can stop charging. Durability and what breaks first
The fenix 8 Solar 47mm sapphire edition has a sapphire lens, a titanium bezel, leakproof metal buttons, a sensor guard and a 40 m dive rating. The Instinct 3 has a metal-reinforced bezel on a fiber-reinforced polymer case, a "scratch-resistant display" with no named material, and 10 ATM. Both carry a MIL-STD 810 line. On paper the fenix is the tougher watch; in practice the Instinct is the one you will not mind scratching.
Navigation and maps
The fenix 8 sapphire editions come with preloaded TopoActive maps; the Instinct 3 navigates by breadcrumb trail, waypoints and TracBack. Both do sunrise, sunset and moon phase from GPS position, ABC sensors and multi-band GNSS with SatIQ. If you have never used a map on a watch, the honest advice is to buy the Instinct and see whether you miss one. Most people do not; the ones who do know who they are.
Price per decade
The fenix costs roughly twice the Instinct at launch. Over ten years the Instinct will cycle its cell perhaps half as many times, and the fenix will still have a clear lens. Our value-per-decade metric scores the Instinct higher because the price gap is larger than the durability gap; the materials metric scores the fenix higher for the opposite reason. The overall scores land close, which is the honest result: these are two good answers to different questions.
Who should buy neither
Someone who wants maps and the longest GPS hours: the Enduro 3. Someone who wants the fenix's materials at a lower price without solar: the COROS VERTIX 2S in the rugged GPS rankings. Someone who wants the newest fenix: Garmin announced the fenix 9 and 9 Pro on August 25, 2026, with a titanium case and solar on select Pro models.

Where it falls short
- No maps: it navigates breadcrumb trails and waypoints, not topo maps.
- The solar figures assume three hours a day at 50,000 lux, which is midday sun, not a sleeve.
- Garmin does not name the lens material; treat it as strengthened glass, not sapphire.
