You should not have to buy this watch twice. Almost every spec a maker advertises is irrelevant to that goal, and the three that matter are rarely on the box: how the watch stays powered, what the lens is made of, and how long the maker will keep it alive. Power is the first durability spec

A watch dies three ways: the battery, the glass, or the software. The battery goes first on most modern watches because a lithium cell ages with every charge cycle, and a watch you charge every four days does nine times the cycles of one you charge every five weeks. Glass is the second

The lens is the first thing to fail on a watch you actually wear, and it is the spec makers are vaguest about. Sapphire is on the fenix 8 sapphire editions, the Enduro 3, the tactix 8, the Suunto Verticals, the COROS VERTIX and APEX Pro, the G-Shock GWG-2000, the Marathon TSAR and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. What MIL-STD-810 does and does not prove

"Built to MIL-STD-810" is the most repeated line in this category and the least understood. MIL-STD-810 is a set of test methods, not a certification body; a maker chooses which methods to run, runs them itself, and self-declares. Apple lists the subsections it tested on the Ultra 3; Garmin says "built to" or "tested to" without a list; Casio makes no claim at all on watches with a longer field record than either. The mistake buyers make

Believing durability is a feature you pay extra for. The most durable watches on this site by our rubric are not the most expensive: a Tough Solar G-Shock and a solar Instinct outscore an Apple Watch Ultra on the metrics that decide a decade, because a sealed 42-hour battery on an annual software cycle is a three-to-five-year product no matter how good the titanium is. Price buys sapphire, maps and titanium; it does not buy time.
