Why this site exists

Rugged watches are sold on words most buyers can't check: "military-grade," "scratch-resistant," "unlimited battery," "indestructible." Some of those words stand on a manual with a battery table and a list of usage assumptions. Some stand on a press release. Some stand on nothing. For a hunter, a hiker or someone deploying who wants to buy a watch once and wear it for ten years, the difference between a solar cell a watchmaker can replace and a sealed lithium cell that cycles every four days matters more than the color of the strap.

Bezel & Bearing exists to sort those words. Every watch we cover carries a power class, a materials record in the maker's own language, and a score built from documents you can open yourself. When a claim has no source, we say so on the page or leave it out.

What we do, and what we don't

• We rank on the makers' own documents. Operation guides and battery tables first, then specification pages and press releases, then the standards those documents name. The weights are public on How We Rate, and power and materials carry half the score.
• We label every pick "Researched." We have not worn, dropped, frozen or drowned the watches on this site, and we never claim we did. Each product's evidence table links to the manual, spec page or release behind every row, so you can check our work.
• We sort by power system. A solar G-Shock, a coin-cell field watch, a solar GPS watch and a rechargeable smartwatch age at different speeds. Every product carries one of four power classes, and it is the first thing on the card.
• We don't print prices. Amazon sets prices and changes them often, so buttons say "Check price on Amazon" until a live, dated price feed is connected.
• We don't link to other sites in the publisher's network, and no brand pays for placement, reviews or rankings.

Who runs it

Bezel & Bearing is written by Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media, an independent publisher of gear sites. Mike ranks watches on what can be verified and labels every pick with how it was evaluated. We don't list credentials we can't show you, and we don't invent experts.
