Specs that differ
Battery: 42 hours vs 48 days
Apple's spec page: up to 42 hours of normal use, up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Garmin's fenix 8 manual: the 51 mm Solar runs up to 30 days in smartwatch mode and 48 with solar, 95 GPS hours (149 with solar) and 186 hours in max-battery GPS (653 with solar). Even the fair fight, Garmin's own AMOLED fenix 8 47 mm, is rated 16 days in gesture mode and 7 always-on. There is no setting on the Apple that closes that gap; it is a different design philosophy, built around a nightly charger and a phone.
The cycle count is the durability point. A cell charged daily does roughly 3,650 cycles in a decade; one charged monthly does about 120. Lithium cells are rated in hundreds of cycles. Our solar lifespan guide covers what that means for capacity.
Durability: closer than you think
On materials, the Apple is at least the Garmin's equal: Grade 5 titanium case, flat sapphire, 100 m water resistance and an EN13319 dive rating to 40 m, and a MIL-STD 810H line that names the subsections tested (altitude, high and low temperature, temperature shock, immersion, freeze/thaw, ice and freezing rain, shock and vibration). Garmin says "tested to U.S. military standards for thermal, shock and water resistance" and names no subsections. On that one line, Apple's documentation is better. The fenix adds leakproof metal buttons and a sensor guard; the Apple adds a siren and a depth gauge. Neither will be the thing that fails first.
Software lifespan
Apple's watches move on an annual cycle tied to watchOS; older models fall off the supported list on a schedule that is public but not long. Garmin keeps previous generations on sale and pushes feature updates to multi-year-old models. Who should buy which
Apple Watch Ultra 3: iPhone users who charge nightly, want satellite SOS and cellular on the wrist, and replace electronics on a three-to-five-year rhythm. Garmin fenix 8 Solar: anyone who wants the same materials with a battery that lets the watch stay on the wrist through a week away from an outlet, and expects to own it for ten years.
