What tactical actually means here
Three concrete things, none of which is a black colorway. First, control over emissions: a stealth mode that stops wireless and location logging, or no radio at all. Second, light discipline: a backlight or flashlight that does not bloom in night-vision optics and does not wake on a wrist turn. Third, the features a job actually calls for: jumpmaster, a ballistics solver, dual-position coordinate formats. Everything else on a tactical watch is the same durability question as every other page on this site, scored on the same rubric, and that question is what decides the ranking.
Power first
A watch that needs a cable every four days needs an outlet every four days, and a deployment does not promise one. So the ranking sorts by power class before anything else:

Light discipline and transmitters
Garmin's Tactical editions and the tactix 8 list a Night Vision Goggle mode that dims the display and a flashlight with a green option; Garmin's Instinct 3 Tactical release also lists a kill switch that wipes user memory. Suunto lists an NVG-compatible red backlight on the Core Alpha. The Marathon and Luminox glow by tritium, which never needs a button and never blooms. The Rangeman's answer to the transmitter question is that it has none. Which of those you need is a rulebook question; our deployment rankings take the rules as the starting point.
Materials and ratings
Sapphire on the tactix 8, the Marathon TSAR and nothing else here. A MIL-STD-810 line on the three Garmins. Water: 30 ATM on the Marathon, 200 m on the Rangeman and Luminox, a 40 m dive rating on the tactix, 10 ATM on the Instincts, and 30 m on the Core Alpha, which is the one number on this page to read twice. The mistake buyers make
Buying a smartwatch before asking whether it is allowed. Units and facilities differ on wireless devices, and a watch you cannot wear on the job is not tactical. The second mistake is paying tactix money for software the Instinct 3 Tactical also has; the head-to-head is Instinct 3 Tactical vs tactix 8.

- No GPS, no maps, no heart rate. It tells you where north is, not where you are.

Watches we claim to have worn or tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they took every watch up a mountain. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the maker's own battery table mode by mode, check what the lens and case are actually made of, note the water rating and whether a MIL-STD-810 claim exists, ask how long the maker keeps updating the line, and score every pick on a public rubric weighted for a decade of ownership. Every figure links to where it came from.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

What is stealth mode on a tactical watch?
Per Garmin, a mode that disables wireless communications and stops recording or sharing location while the watch keeps collecting biometric data. It is on the tactix 8 and the Instinct Tactical editions.
Are tactical smartwatches allowed in the military?
It depends on the service, unit and facility. Stealth mode exists because standard smartwatches transmit; ask before buying, and if the answer is no, an ABC digital or analog is the tactical watch.
