Garmin sapphire vs Gorilla Glass: which models have which lens, and whether the sapphire edition is worth it

Notice that Garmin does not say "Gorilla Glass" anywhere in the documents we cite. Searchers use the phrase because Corning's name is the generic for chemically strengthened glass; Garmin's own term for its strengthened solar lens is Power Glass. Treat "not named" as "not sapphire."

What the difference actually is

Sapphire is a synthetic crystal, far harder than glass; in daily wear that means keys, sand and rock leave no mark, and the lens looks the same in year ten as on day one. Its weakness is brittleness: a hard edge strike can chip or crack it where strengthened glass would flex and scratch. Chemically strengthened glass is the opposite trade: it scratches from ordinary grit over years and shrugs off the edge strike. A raised bezel, which every Instinct and fenix has, protects against the strike; nothing but sapphire protects against the grit. Power Glass and Power Sapphire

Garmin's solar lens is a layer in the crystal; Garmin calls the strengthened-glass version Power Glass (named on the Instinct 2X Solar release, where Garmin says it produces 50 percent more energy than the Instinct 2's lens) and pairs solar with sapphire on the fenix 8 Solar sapphire editions. So a solar lens does not force you to give up sapphire; on the fenix, you get both. On the Instinct, you get solar and a lens Garmin does not name.

Is the sapphire edition worth it?

On the fenix 8, the sapphire edition also brings the titanium bezel and preloaded maps, so the premium buys three things and the answer is yes for a decade buyer. On the fenix 7 Pro the Sapphire Edition is the only way to get sapphire on that platform. On the Instinct there is no sapphire option; the argument for buying an Instinct anyway is that it costs half a fenix, and a scratched Instinct in year six is a watch you can afford to have scratched.
