Every Garmin figure is from the model's owner's manual or press release; the Suunto figures are from its product page. Garmin publishes the Enduro 3 as headline numbers (320 GPS hours with solar, 90 days smartwatch) rather than a with-and-without table, so its solar smartwatch cell is blank.
What the lens adds, mode by mode
In smartwatch mode the lens takes the Instinct from 40 days to unlimited, the fenix 8 51mm from 30 days to 48, the Suunto from 30 to 60. In GPS-only mode it takes the Instinct 3 50mm from 60 hours to 260, the fenix 8 51mm from 95 to 149, the Suunto from 65 to 90. In Garmin's low-rate max-battery mode it takes the fenix 8 51mm from 186 hours to 653. The pattern: the lens helps most where the draw is lowest. A watch sitting in smartwatch mode on a sunny wrist can genuinely stop charging; a watch tracking at full rate gets a meaningful but finite extension.
Lens size decides the GPS row
The Instinct 3 Solar 50mm doubles the 45mm on solar GPS hours (260 vs 130) with the same non-solar cell difference of only 60 vs 40. The fenix 8 Solar 47mm's all-systems row barely moves with solar (48 to 49 hours) while the 51mm's goes from 68 to 92. Bigger lens, more current, and the effect is largest exactly where the GPS draw is highest. If solar GPS hours are the reason you are buying, buy the largest case you can wear.
The 50,000-lux assumption
The mistake buyers make
Buying the AMOLED version of a solar watch. Garmin's AMOLED Instinct 3 and fenix 8 models have no solar lens, and the Suunto Vertical 2 dropped it. If solar is why you are here, the model name has to say Solar; see Instinct 3 Solar vs AMOLED.

- Physical buttons, a monochrome display readable in full sun, and a flashlight with a red mode.
- 10 ATM rating and a MIL-STD 810 claim on a watch that costs less than half a fenix.
Where it falls short
- No maps: it navigates breadcrumb trails and waypoints, not topo maps.
- The solar figures assume three hours a day at 50,000 lux, which is midday sun, not a sleeve.
- Garmin does not name the lens material; treat it as strengthened glass, not sapphire.

Watches we claim to have worn or tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they took every watch up a mountain. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the maker's own battery table mode by mode, check what the lens and case are actually made of, note the water rating and whether a MIL-STD-810 claim exists, ask how long the maker keeps updating the line, and score every pick on a public rubric weighted for a decade of ownership. Every figure links to where it came from.

Which GPS watch has solar charging?
Garmin's Instinct 3 Solar, Instinct 2 and 2X Solar, fenix 8 Solar (47 and 51mm), fenix 7 Pro Solar, Enduro 3 and tactix 8 Solar, plus select fenix 9 Pro models; Suunto's Vertical Titanium Solar. The AMOLED Garmins and the Suunto Vertical 2 do not.
Is solar charging on a GPS watch worth it?
Garmin's own tables say yes if you are outdoors: the Instinct 3 Solar 50mm goes from 40 days to unlimited and 60 to 260 GPS hours with three hours a day at 50,000 lux. Indoors, the gain is small.
What is the longest battery solar GPS watch?
In GPS mode, the Garmin Enduro 3 at 320 hours with solar. In smartwatch mode, the Instinct 3 Solar, rated unlimited with solar.
