What it is built for
Garmin's release: a scratch-resistant sapphire lens, a titanium bezel, built to a U.S. military standard (MIL-STD-810) for thermal, shock and water resistance, a 40-meter dive rating with leakproof buttons, a multi-LED flashlight with white or green light, dedicated rucking and dive activities, a speaker and mic. Four models: 47mm AMOLED (16 days smartwatch), 51mm AMOLED, 51mm Solar (48 days always-on with solar), and Solar Elite with the full Applied Ballistics solver. This review is about the 51mm Solar, because it is the one rated in weeks.
Battery in real modes
Garmin's tactix 8 release gives the headline figures: 16 days for the 47mm AMOLED and 48 days for the 51mm Solar with an always-on display. It does not itemize GPS hours. The tactix 8 Solar 51mm shares the fenix 8 Solar 51mm chassis, whose manual lists 95 GPS-only hours (149 with solar), 52 multi-band (65 with solar), 186 max-battery (653 with solar) and 50 days expedition (118 with solar); treat those as the best available guide, not a tactix-specific promise. Solar assumes three hours a day at 50,000 lux.
Durability and what fails first
Sapphire, titanium, leakproof buttons, a dive rating and a MIL-STD-810 line: the top materials score on the site, shared with the fenix 8 sapphire editions and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Garmin's MIL-STD wording names the categories (thermal, shock, water) but not the subsections; see what MIL-STD-810 proves.
The tactical software
- Stealth Mode: wireless communications disabled while biometric data is still collected.
- Night Vision Goggle mode: a dimmed display for NVG compatibility.
- Jumpmaster: HAHO, HALO and static jump types.
- Applied Ballistics: the Ultralight solver preloaded; the Elite edition carries the full version.

Anyone who does not need the tactical software: the fenix 8 Solar. Anyone who needs the software but not sapphire, maps or a dive rating: the Instinct 3 Tactical. Anyone who cannot wear a wireless device at all: the ABC and analog picks in best military watches.
