Specs that differ (and don't)
Garmin's tactix 8 release gives the 51mm Solar 48 days in smartwatch mode with the always-on display, matching the fenix 8 Solar 51mm's 48 days with solar. Both have a sapphire lens, a titanium bezel, leakproof buttons, a 40 m dive rating and a MIL-STD-810 line. The tactix release does not itemize GPS hours, so the fenix 8 manual's figures (95 GPS-only, 149 with solar, 653 max-battery with solar) are the best available guide.
The tactical software, item by item
- Stealth mode. Disables wireless communications while still collecting biometric data. Useful where a Bluetooth beacon is a problem.
- Night Vision Goggle mode. Dims the display for NVG compatibility.
- Jumpmaster. HAHO, HALO and static jump calculations.
- Applied Ballistics. The Ultralight solver is preloaded per Garmin; the Elite edition adds the full version. On the Instinct 3 Tactical the solver is a paid unlock.
- Kill switch and dual-position format. Listed on Garmin's Instinct 3 Tactical release; the tactix 8 release we cite lists stealth, NVG, jumpmaster and ballistics.
Everything else on the tactix (maps, speaker and mic, dive activities, rucking, health metrics) is the fenix 8 feature set.
Green vs red flashlight
The tactix 8's multi-LED flashlight offers white or green; the fenix 8's offers white, red and strobe. Green preserves night vision under NVG protocols; red is the civilian convention for preserving dark adaptation. Neither is better; one matches a rulebook you either follow or do not.
Who should buy neither
Someone who wants the tactical software without fenix money: the Instinct 3 Solar Tactical has stealth mode, NVG mode, a kill switch, jumpmaster and a green flashlight on a watch rated unlimited with solar; the head-to-head is Instinct 3 Tactical vs tactix 8. Someone who wants the longest GPS hours in this chassis: the Enduro 3.

Yes: the 51mm Solar and Solar Elite models. The 47mm and 51mm AMOLED models do not.
