What it is built for
Garmin's release: "bolted construction with a metal-reinforced bezel," a fiber-reinforced polymer case, "built to MIL-STD 810 for thermal and shock resistance," "water-rated up to 100 meters," a scratch-resistant display, and the tactical set below. It comes as a 50mm AMOLED or 45/50mm solar; this review is about the 50mm solar, because that is the one rated for months.
The tactical software, from Garmin's release
- Stealth Mode: turns off wireless and collects data without recording location.
- Kill Switch: wipes the device of all user memory.
- Night Vision Goggle mode: dims the display for NVG compatibility.
- Jumpmaster: a preloaded tactical activity.
- Dual-position format: two coordinate sets displayed at once.
- Flashlight: variable intensities, a green light and strobe.
- Applied Ballistics solver: available with an unlock fee.

Battery: the Instinct 3 Solar table
Garmin's Tactical release repeats the Instinct 3 Solar claims: unlimited battery life in smartwatch mode with solar (all-day wear, three hours a day at 50,000 lux) and more than five times the Instinct 2 Solar's GPS battery on the 50mm. The Instinct 3 Solar 50mm manual gives the full table: 40 days smartwatch (unlimited with solar), 60 GPS-only hours (260 with solar), 150 max-battery hours (unlimited with solar). Durability and what fails first
Ten ATM, a MIL-STD 810 line for thermal and shock, a bolted metal-reinforced bezel, and a lens Garmin does not name. Same as the standard Instinct 3, which is the point.
Solar or AMOLED Tactical
The AMOLED Tactical is rated up to 24 days in smartwatch mode per Garmin's release; the solar models are rated unlimited. For a watch whose job is a deployment, that is the whole decision, and it is the same one as Instinct 3 Solar vs AMOLED.
Who should skip it
Anyone who will never use stealth mode, NVG mode or jumpmaster: the standard Instinct 3 Solar is the same hardware for less. Anyone who needs the ballistics solver preloaded, sapphire and maps: the tactix 8; the head-to-head is Instinct 3 Tactical vs tactix 8. Anyone whose rules forbid a transmitter: the Rangeman.
