Sort by nights out
A day hike is six GPS hours; a weekend twelve to fifteen; a week forty to fifty; a thru-hike section is a problem of charging, not tracking. Garmin's own tables sort the field cleanly:

Expedition mode is Garmin's low-rate GPS setting for multi-day trips: a point every so often instead of every second, enough for a track and a back-to-start line. Sixty days on the Instinct 3 Solar 50mm and 90 on the Enduro 3 mean a thru-hike section without a charger is a settings question, not a hardware one.
Maps or breadcrumbs
The Instincts navigate by breadcrumb trail, waypoints and TracBack; the fenix 8, fenix 9 Pro and Enduro 3 carry preloaded TopoActive maps. On a marked trail the breadcrumb is enough and the Instinct's battery is the reward. Off trail, or on a route with junctions you have not walked, the map on the wrist earns its cost. The lens on rock
Hiking is where lenses die: scrambles, pack straps, trekking-pole grips. Sapphire is on the fenix 8 sapphire editions, the fenix 9 Pro and the Enduro 3. Garmin names no lens material on the Instinct 3 and calls it "scratch-resistant." A raised bezel helps on the Instinct; sapphire helps more. Garmin sapphire vs Gorilla Glass sorts the models.
The mistake buyers make
Buying the Instinct E to save money and discovering it charges like any other watch. Garmin's table gives it 24 GPS hours and no solar; the Instinct 3 Solar 45mm is rated unlimited in smartwatch mode with sun and has a flashlight. On a hiking watch the solar lens is the feature. - No maps: it navigates breadcrumb trails and waypoints, not topo maps.
- The solar figures assume three hours a day at 50,000 lux, which is midday sun, not a sleeve.
- Garmin does not name the lens material; treat it as strengthened glass, not sapphire.

What we do instead: read the maker's own battery table mode by mode, check what the lens and case are actually made of, note the water rating and whether a MIL-STD-810 claim exists, ask how long the maker keeps updating the line, and score every pick on a public rubric weighted for a decade of ownership.
