The software they share
Stealth mode (wireless off, no location recording), night-vision-goggle mode, jumpmaster, a green flashlight option and multi-band GPS. Garmin's Instinct 3 Tactical release also lists a kill switch and a dual-position coordinate format; its tactix 8 release lists jumpmaster's HAHO, HALO and static jump types and Applied Ballistics preloaded. What the tactix buys
- Sapphire lens and titanium bezel. The Instinct's lens is unnamed strengthened glass on a metal-reinforced polymer bezel.
- A 40 m dive rating with leakproof buttons. The Instinct is 10 ATM.
- Preloaded topo maps, a speaker and mic. The Instinct has breadcrumbs and no speaker.
- Applied Ballistics preloaded. On the Instinct it is an unlock fee.
- A bigger, sharper MIP display in a 51mm case.
What the Instinct keeps
The battery table. Garmin rates the tactix 8 Solar 51mm at 48 days in smartwatch mode with solar and always-on display; it rates the Instinct 3 Solar 50mm unlimited in smartwatch mode with solar, 260 GPS hours with sun against the fenix 8 chassis's 149. And the price: roughly a third, which for a watch that may be lost, confiscated or crushed is not a small thing. The rubric's value metric scores the Instinct 8 and the tactix 5 for that reason, and it is why the two land close overall.
Who should buy neither
Anyone whose rules forbid a transmitter: stealth mode is a setting, not an absence, and the Rangeman GW-9400 has no radio to switch off. Anyone who wants the tactix's hardware without the tactical premium: the fenix 8 Solar.
