The week, as a battery problem

A rifle elk hunt in the West is typically five to ten days from the truck, with the GPS recording most of the daylight hours and no power at camp. A watch rated in "days of smartwatch mode" will not survive that; what matters is the GPS-hours column of the maker's battery table, and the expedition-mode column if the watch has one. What Garmin's tables say

Read the solar columns with Garmin's footnote in mind: they assume three hours a day at 50,000 lux. An open-country elk hunt at altitude in September is close to the best case that footnote describes; a hunt in dark timber is not. Plan on the non-solar column and treat the solar gain as margin.

The no-charger alternative

A Rangeman GW-9400 records no track and shows no map, and Casio rates it at about 8 months in the dark on Tough Solar, indefinitely in light, with a compass, an altimeter that reads your climb, a barometer that reads the front, sunrise and sunset, and cold resistance to -10°C. Set these before the trailhead

1. Pick the GPS mode for the week, not the day. On a Garmin, a max-battery or expedition mode trades track detail for days; Garmin's tables list each mode. Decide at the truck, not at 4 percent.
2. Turn off what you will not use. Always-on display, phone notifications and wrist heart rate all cost hours the table does not include.
3. Load the map before you lose signal. The fenix and Enduro ship with TopoActive preloaded; the Instinct has no maps, so mark the truck and camp as waypoints while you still have them in view.
4. Set the reference altitude at the trailhead sign on any ABC watch; Casio's manual describes it, and a pressure front over the week will drift it otherwise.
5. Charge to full in the truck and pack the cable anyway: a power bank is lighter than a dead watch.
