The toughest G-Shock: five ranked by what actually breaks, not by the name on the bezel

What every G-Shock already has

Shock resistance and 200 m water resistance are the entry ticket, and every watch on this page has both per Casio's published specs. So "toughest" cannot be decided by them. It is decided by the four things that actually end a G-Shock: a scratched or cracked crystal, a cracked or degraded case, a button seal that lets mud in, and a power system that stops. We ranked the current line on those four, using the rubric's materials and serviceability metrics.

The crystal: sapphire vs mineral

The GWG-2000 lists a sapphire crystal with anti-glare coating. Every other G-Shock here lists mineral. Mineral glass scratches from sand and steel over years; sapphire does not. The G-Shock defense against that has always been the bezel, which stands proud of the crystal and takes the strike, and it works; the Rangeman's deep bezel is why decade-old GW-9400s still read clearly. The case: carbon vs resin

Casio's Carbon Core Guard structure (GWG-2000, GG-B100) is a carbon-fiber-reinforced resin case; the GW-9500 also uses carbon and resin; the Rangeman and the square are resin. Resin is not weak (the DW-5600 has been surviving since 1987 in it), but it does age: UV and sweat make old resin brittle, and the bezel and strap are the parts that eventually crack. On a carbon case the structural part outlasts the cosmetic parts by a wider margin. Either way, bezels and straps are cheap Casio parts.

The seals: mud resistance

The Mudmaster, Mudman and Rangeman carry Casio's mud-resistant construction: button shafts sealed with gaskets so silt cannot jam them. The GA-100 and DW-5600E do not. If your watch spends time in mud, sand or concrete dust, the difference shows up as buttons that still click in year five.

The power: solar vs coin cell

Neither power system is a weakness. A Tough Solar cell recharges from light for years and is a watchmaker-replaceable part when it finally tires; a coin cell is the simplest, cheapest thing on the watch. Both beat a sealed rechargeable that cycles weekly. See G-Shock solar battery replacement.

The mistake buyers make

Equating size with toughness. The 61 mm GWG-2000 is the toughest watch here and also the one most likely to be left in a drawer because it is heavy. A G-Shock in a drawer is not tough; it is stored. Buy the toughest one you will actually wear, which for many wrists is the Mudman GW-9500 or the square.
