G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-2000 review: sapphire and forged carbon on a solar Casio, if your wrist can carry it

What it is built for

Casio's Mudmaster is the land-vehicle end of the Master of G line: a case built to keep mud, sand and dust out of the buttons and a crystal built to take the hits a raised bezel cannot. The GWG-2000 is the version that stopped compromising on the crystal. If a Rangeman is the watch for a decade on a wrist, the GWG-2000 is the watch for a decade on a wrist that goes through brush, gravel and steel.

The sapphire, and why it matters on a G-Shock

Every other G-Shock we rank uses a mineral crystal and relies on the bezel to keep things off it. That works against strikes and fails against grit; a ten-year-old mineral G-Shock reads through a haze of fine scratches. The GWG-2000's sapphire with anti-glare coating does not scratch in ordinary use, which is why the toughest G-Shock ranking puts it first and why it is the only Casio in the top tier of the most durable watches list. Power and sensors, from the guide

"Solar panel and one rechargeable battery," approximately 6 months of operation under Casio's listed usage. Time calibration by auto and manual receive across JJY, WWVB, MSF, DCF77 and BPC. Direction measurement within ±10°, pressure within ±3 hPa, temperature within ±2°C, an altimeter with 30-record memory, a barometric pressure graph, five alarms and 29-city world time. A double LED (dial light plus LCD backlight) with Full Auto Light and Super Illuminator. The specifications page we read does not list sunrise/sunset, and we do not credit what we cannot cite.

Durability and what fails first

Sapphire with anti-glare; a bezel of forged carbon, resin and stainless steel; a Carbon Core Guard case; resin band; 200 m; shock and mud resistant; 61.2 × 54.4 × 16.1 mm; 106 g. Nothing on the outside of this watch is a soft material.

The GG-B100

The other current Mudmaster shares the Carbon Core Guard idea on a smaller, lighter case (55.4 × 51.3 × 19.4 mm, 92 g), swaps the solar cell for a CR2025 rated about two years, adds a step counter to the triple sensor and Bluetooth for the app, and keeps a mineral crystal. It is a good coin-cell ABC watch with phone sync; it is not the sapphire, solar, atomic Mudmaster, and the price gap says so.

Who should skip it
